Whole-House Surge Protection: What Las Vegas Homeowners Should Know
Considering whole-house surge protection? Learn what it does, how it differs from plug-in protection, and what to ask before scheduling installation.
What does whole-house surge protection do?
A whole-house surge protective device helps reduce exposure to brief voltage spikes that can damage electrical equipment.
Installed at an appropriate point in the home's electrical system, it can provide broader protection than a plug-in protector serving a few devices.
It does not guarantee that equipment will never be damaged. It also does not provide backup electricity or repair an existing electrical fault.

Are power surges only caused by lightning?
No. Surges can originate outside the home or from equipment operating inside it.
The Electrical Safety Foundation International explains that large appliances switching on and off can produce surges. Utility events and lightning can also be sources.
A visible flicker or equipment shutdown does not, by itself, establish that a surge occurred. If you are experiencing ongoing electrical symptoms, describe them to an electrician before choosing a product.
How is it different from a plug-in surge protector?
A plug-in surge protector serves equipment connected through that device. A whole-house device addresses surges at a broader point in the electrical system, including equipment that cannot conveniently plug into a protective strip.
Ask an electrician whether additional point-of-use protection is appropriate for particular equipment.
An ordinary power strip is not necessarily a surge protector. Check the product information rather than assuming that multiple sockets mean surge protection.
What does it not solve?
Whole-house surge protection should not be treated as the repair for:
- Repeated circuit-breaker trips.
- Damaged outlets or wiring.
- Insufficient circuit capacity.
- Persistent flickering or unusual voltage changes.
- Power outages.
Those concerns may require diagnosis or a different solution. Explain the problem you want addressed so the contractor can distinguish a protective upgrade from necessary repair work.
No surge protective device guarantees protection against every event, including a direct lightning strike.
What affects the installation scope?
The contractor needs to assess the electrical installation and select compatible equipment.
Ask the estimate to identify:
- The proposed device and installation location.
- Compatibility with your existing electrical equipment.
- Any additional electrical work needed.
- Permit and inspection arrangements where applicable.
- Installation labor and materials.
- Manufacturer warranty terms and exclusions.
Do not assume every home needs a panel replacement to add surge protection. Ask the contractor to explain any proposed upgrade and why it is needed.
What should you ask about the warranty?
Distinguish the product warranty, installation workmanship coverage, and any connected-equipment coverage.
Ask how a claim works, what documentation is required, and which exclusions apply. Do not treat an advertised coverage amount as a promise that every damaged appliance will be reimbursed.
Keep the invoice, product model, and warranty documents after installation.
How do you know whether the device is still working?
Ask the installer to explain the specific device's status indicators and what to do if they change.
Follow the manufacturer's inspection and replacement instructions. Do not open the electrical panel or touch wiring to check the device.
If an indicator is accessible only by removing an electrical cover, leave that inspection to a qualified professional.
What to include in an installation request
For your Las Vegas Valley home, provide:
- Your ZIP code and property type.
- Whether you want a preventive upgrade or have experienced a specific problem.
- Any existing surge protection you know about.
- A photo of the panel's exterior, if safely accessible.
- Any planned electrical projects you want assessed at the same time.
You do not need to select a device or know your panel's internal details before requesting help. Do not remove its cover for photographs.
Request whole-house surge protection help
Use the request button below to ask about an assessment and installation.
If you also have breaker trips, flickering, or damaged equipment, describe those separately so the contractor can determine whether troubleshooting is needed first.
